THE BOARDS EXPO
__

I was invited by the Rotary club Aalter to participate in their 18th Biënnale in the beautiful castle of Poeke. A body of work consisting out of 3 illustrations on skatedecks. Eventough they all have their own story, they were pretty much created the same way.

Scroll down to discover the details of the "Bake Kujira, "Tāne Mahuta" & "Medusa" board.  At the bottom i added a chapter with some work-progress shots. Enjoy!

BAKE KUJIRA BOARD

It's a mythical Japanese creature, which literally means "ghost whale". In one story a fisherman tries to catch it with his harpoon but the harpoon sailed right through it and the whale floated away. If you look close enough you'll see the boat that launched the harpoon on top. The rope guides you all the way down to the bottom of the ocean.

TĀNE MAHUTA BOARD

It is the name of one of the largest Kauri tree in New Zealand, estimated to be between 1250 and 2500 years old. It's Māori name means "lord of the forest". It is a remnant of the ancient subtropical rainforest. It seemed a very suited name for an illustration filled with aerial fauna and dense flora.

MEDUSA BOARD

Is the battle between good & evil, Symbols of life like the heart, protected by the hands and ribcage, combined with some more evil and deadly characters like snakes the rat and the wolf. The humans are kind of caught in the middle, not quite the happy place. Combined with lots of cult like symbols and writings worshipping these divine creatures.

WORK-IN-PROGRESS

I used pencils to sketch out the main theme and drew the final image with black pens. The Medusa board was sketched out digitally, transferred to the board with some tracing paper and finished with a black pen. Nothing fancy just your regular day-to-day pens.
